Appearance: The Powder Blue Tang has a vibrant blue body with a yellow face and a white-edged black patch on the dorsal fin. It also has a sharp spine near its tail, which it uses for defense. Juveniles have a slightly different appearance, with a yellow tail and blue markings.
Size: These fish can grow up to 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) in length, making them a medium-sized species in the surgeonfish family.
Habitat: Powder Blue Tangs are commonly found in coral reef environments throughout the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, the Maldives, and the Great Barrier Reef. They inhabit areas with clear waters and rich coral growth.
Behavior: They are generally peaceful fish but can become aggressive towards other surgeonfish species. They are active swimmers, constantly foraging for algae and other small organisms. It's important to note that they are prone to stress and need a well-established aquarium environment to thrive.
Diet: In the wild, Powder Blue Tangs primarily feed on algae, both on the coral reefs and in the water column. In an aquarium setting, it is important to provide them with a varied diet that includes high-quality marine-based flakes, pellets, and frozen foods specifically formulated for herbivorous fish. Supplementing their diet with seaweed or algae sheets is also recommended.
Aquarium Care: Keeping a Powder Blue Tang requires a well-maintained and adequately sized aquarium. The minimum recommended tank size is around 75 gallons (280 liters) for a single specimen. They need plenty of swimming space and a well-established reef environment with live rock and coral formations to mimic their natural habitat.
Compatibility: Powder Blue Tangs can be aggressive towards other surgeonfish species and may establish a territory. It's advisable to keep only one specimen per tank unless you have a very large aquarium with ample space for multiple individuals. When it comes to tankmates, choose peaceful species that can handle the Powder Blue Tang's active swimming habits.
