The Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang, also known as the Yellow Belly Hippo Tang or Paracanthurus hepatus, is a species of saltwater fish that belongs to the family Acanthuridae. It is a popular aquarium fish known for its striking blue coloration and vibrant yellow tail.

Appearance: The body of the Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang is predominantly deep blue, with a vibrant yellow tail that gives it its name. It has a sleek, oval-shaped body and a pointed snout. Like other tangs, it possesses a sharp spine near its tail, called a caudal spine.
Size: In the wild, Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tangs can grow up to about 12 inches (30 cm) in length. However, when kept in aquariums, they usually reach a maximum size of around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm).
Behavior: Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tangs are generally peaceful and active swimmers. However, they can become territorial and aggressive towards other tangs or similar-looking fish. It is advisable to provide them with plenty of space and suitable tank mates to minimize aggression.
Diet: In the wild, they are herbivores, mainly feeding on various types of algae and marine plants. In an aquarium, their diet should consist of a variety of high-quality dried seaweed, algae-based pellets, and flake foods. Supplementing their diet with fresh or frozen marine-based foods like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp is also beneficial.
Aquarium requirements: Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tangs require a spacious aquarium of at least 75 gallons (284 liters) to accommodate their swimming needs. They appreciate a well-established tank with live rock for hiding places and grazing on algae. It is important to maintain stable water conditions, including appropriate temperature (around 75-82°F or 24-28°C) and salinity levels.
Compatibility: While the Yellow Belly Regal Blue Tang can be kept in a reef aquarium, it may nip at certain types of corals or invertebrates. When selecting tank mates, it is important to consider their compatibility and ensure they are not overly aggressive or territorial.
